We made it! The drive only took about 10 hours and though it was very bumpy, the missionary said it was actually MUCH improved just from the week before when they took it to town to pick us up. There were no hiccups and we arrived around 4 in the afternoon.
There are people everywhere...I don't think there was a stretch on the drive where a head wouldn't be peering out along the side of the road - even deep in the bush. The country is absolutely beautiful and the people even more so. I don't think I can ever stop smiling when looking at the smiles on the little children's faces. And they would just stare as we drove by! We are some of the only white people they have ever seen and according to the missionaries, probably the tallest people they've ever been around. Several of the locals have said they are scared of us for these reasons, haha.
When we arrived, we were able to meet the rest of the family as well as a local who lives with them. Many from the community have come to welcome us and we are trying our best to learn some Swahili so we can communicate some with the people.
After spending time with a few visitors this morning, we went to get some bread from a local breadmaker. The family goes every Saturday and are his main source of business. He was very kind and gave Nick and I each a loaf to welcome us! On our way home, we received a call that a friend of the family had some zebra meat for us! A zebra had wandered into a man's cashew field and he killed him. He then sold the meat and the friend bought some for the family. We came home and cooked it and ate it with the bread...it was absolutely delicious!
We spent a lot of time with the couple we're staying with today, learning about each other's callings and talking about life on the field. We are gaining invaluable knowledge being here with them and learning about the process to becoming a foreigh missionary. We also had a fairly long session of Swahili this afternoon - we're trying our hardest to learn a lot during the month we are here.
Now we're off to bed...the stars are beautiful and bright out here - I've never seen anything like it.
